Advice should not just be given to those who can afford it.
“Free advice is worth what you pay for it" suggests that the perceived worth of advice is directly related to the price paid. I am not offering my advice or my services for free, but I do want to offer it at a discount to people who are not able to pay the large sums of money most consulting firms are charging.
Generally speaking, people who are privileged grew up with the playbook to success, whereas people who are first generation college students and/or from marginalized communities weren’t even told there is a playbook. It has been my goal for over 30 years to help people who are diverse with a long road traveled get into healthcare. Reason-better medical outcomes and care for all.
My love of continuous process improvement and root cause analysis taught me if I want to advise effectively, I need to be an expert at all aspects of the process. I worked in healthcare for 40+ years, created and managed extracurriculars, became an Academic Advisor, Associate Professor, was employed as a CASPer rater and taught Professors/Physicians how to write strong LOR. These experiences coupled with working for a successful consulting firm and my seven years on the Admission Committee of the UWSOM have made it so I have done it all and my success at getting students accepted shows it.
